Thanks to the spacers on the top of my stem, I was never able to mount my Garmin Edge 800 to the stem as they suggest. Instead I mounted it to the handlebar using the Garmin mount kit, but it was never very stable and placed the GPS at an odd angle. The other day I picked up the Garmin Edge mount from K-Edge. It attaches to the handlebar and places the Edge GPS unit directly in front of the stem at an angle that is perfect for viewing while riding. While some may consider it a little pricey, I don't think its too bad for a nicely crafted piece of aluminum that just plain works.

Over the winter I decided to get a new wheelset for the Tallboy Carbon. I was tempted to spend some serious cash and go carbon, but in the end I decided on the lightweight and affordable Arch EX 29er wheels from Stans. For just over $500 you get a lightweight set of wheels that should be plenty durable for a rider of my size (180 lbs all geared up). I can't wait to get out on the trails with these this spring.

After several rides on my Tallboy Carbon, I seemed to be getting a lot of chain slap on really rough sections of the trail. I ignored it at first, but then started to wonder if I might be doing damage to the frame. My Tallboy has a protective carbon wrap on the chain stay, and I added a neoprene wrap as well, but you still never know what kind of damage might happen if the chain continues to slap the same spot on the frame over and over. So, I decided to swap out my standard SRAM X9 rear derailleur for one of their "Type 2" models.
The SRAM X9 Type 2 Rear Derailleur is a big improvement over the standard X9 derailleur. I've been riding with it for several months now, and so far, shifting is buttery smooth, and chain slap has been eliminated. Additionally, the locking feature makes it easier to remove the rear wheel. This thing just plain works... and I'm not sure why anybody would opt for the standard rear derailleur.

I'd been shopping around for a nice stand to hold up my Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon when I stumbled upon this clever little stand from Feedback Sports. No assembly is required, so you pull this thing out of the box, set it on the floor, flip the arm back, roll your bike into it, and let the arm rest against the back tire. Simple as that. It holds the bike upgright and seems to be very sturdy. Now I don't have to lean the SC against the wall and worry about it falling over and damaging the expensive carbon frame!

DAILY DEAL: Santa Cruz Nickel Frame w/ FOX RL Shock at Hucknroll.com
SALE PRICE: $699.00 ( 48% Off, Reg. $1,349.95!!)
The Santa Cruz Nickel benefits from Active Pivot Point (APP) suspension, which is the result of Santa Cruz's efforts to mimic the variable shock rate produced by its Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension, but in a simpler and more cost-effective single-pivot design. What's so special about that VPP shock rate? Riders of Santa Cruz's popular Blur will testify that it makes the first part of the travel plush and ultra-responsive to bumps, and the last part of the travel stiffer to avoid harsh bottom-out. The Nickel gets five inches (125mm) of rear travel out of the accompanying Fox Float RL shock, a light and adjustable unit with compression lockout and rebound adjustment.

There are still those times and places where the best way to light the fuse and blow everyone else into the weeds is by riding a hardtail. Bigger wheels have revived the venerable double diamond design, and by mixing the smooth rolling hoops with a feathery 2.4-pound carbon fiber frame, Santa Cruz has come up with a potent race weapon. Anyone who complains about a bad day climbing while riding this bike needs to find another sport. The Highball Carbon is insanely light, razor sharp, nimble but surefooted, stiff as a plank, and designed to do two things: 1. Race. 2. Win.
The frame features a tapered head tube, short chainstays, 142x12mm thru axle, and disc tabs molded into frame during proprietary one piece layup. Lighter, stronger, stiffer.
